Baldwin
DESCRIPTION
The sweet, juicy, spicy, and crisp Baldwin is a dark red apple useful for cooking, processing, and cider-making. Baldwins are ready for picking in late September through November.
HISTORY
The first Baldwin was grown on John Ball's Wilmington, Massachusetts farm around 1740. Its original name was Woodpecker, as the first trees attracted these birds. Baldwins, a huge commercial success in the early 1900s, fell in popularity when the McIntosh surpassed it.
