Winesap
DESCRIPTION
The Winesap is deep crimson in color with a rather tough skin, and it has a firm, juicy, light yellow flesh with a wine-like sweet tart flavor. It is an all-purpose apple that keeps for a long time, and it is favored for cider-making. Ripening dates range from late September to early November.
HISTORY
The Winesap was first grown in Moore's Town, New Jersey before 1800. It was widely grown in the southern United States in the 19th Century, especially in Virginia. Today's Winesap may actually be its offspring, Stayman, developed in 1866.
