Esopus Spitzenburg

DESCRIPTION

The Esopus Spitzenburg has a pale yellow flesh that is firm and crisp. It has a spicy character that improves after it is picked. A great dessert apple, it also is a good choice for baking, and it stores very well. Harvesting begins in September and continues through October.

HISTORY

This heirloom variety dates back to the 1700s when it was discovered on a farm in Esopus, New York. Two famous historical figures, Washington Irving and Thomas Jefferson, enjoyed Spitzenburgs.
