An ever-popular cooking, fresh eating, drying, and juice apple, Northern Spy is a larger than average apple with a deep red skin and red striping. Its strong, sweet flavor and crisp texture make it an overall favorite. Harvest begins in late September and into October.
The first seed of Northern Spy came from Salisbury, Connecticut around 1800, and it was first grown by H. Chapin of East Bloomfield, New York. Introduced in 1840, it quickly became a commercial success especially in New England and in Canada even though it takes 6-12 years to bear fruit, and it is often a biennial bearer after that.
