Calville Blanc d'Hiver
|Discovered||1500s France or Germany|
Calville Blanc is a large ribbed apple with a tart, light yellow flesh. This antique variety ripens in late October through December. Its flavor improves in storage as does its warm coloring. Some people can detect a distinct banana-like taste in Calville Blancs.
Calville Blanc was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson who grew them at Monticello. They date back to the 1500s.
