Wolf Rivers are large, weighing as much as one pound apiece. They are an outstanding cooking apple, and good in cider as well. Their pale yellow skin is covered in dull red, their flesh juicy and tender with a tart flavor. An unusual characteristic in Wolf River is that they grow true from seed. Harvest varies from August to October; these do not store well.


Wolf River dates back to about 1875, discovered along the river that gave it its name in Wisconsin. It is a probable seedling of a Russian apple, Alexander.
