Northern Spy

DESCRIPTION

An ever-popular cooking, fresh eating, drying, and juice apple, Northern Spy is a larger than average apple with a deep red skin with red striping. Its strong, sweet flavor and crisp texture make it an overall favorite. Harvest begins in late September and into October.

HISTORY

The first seed of Northern Spy came from Salisbury, Connecticut around 1800, and it was first grown by H. Chapin of East Bloomfield, New York. Introduced in 1840, it quickly became a commercial success especially in the northeast United States and in Canada even though it can take 12 years before it bears fruit, and it is often a biennial bearer after that.
